Fitness-for-Service

The ABI® test is useful where a life extension evaluation is planned for a component and adequate materials property data are not available. It is also used to measure properties for materials that may have service damage that has caused a change in tensile properties during service life — such as neutron embrittlement of nuclear pressure vessels.

Another important application is the determination of yield strength of ferritic steel components, such as oil and gas pipelines, when no documentation exists for the original and/or repair material and when a deterministic fitness-for-service evaluation is required for safe operation at current or higher (up-rated) pressures.

Post-Incident Assessment

Assess whether mechanical properties have degraded after fire exposure, thermal excursions, or accident conditions. ABI® provides before-and-after comparison data without requiring destructive sampling.

What ABI® Provides for FFS Evaluations

Fitness-for-service assessments per API 579/ASME FFS-1 require material property data that is often unavailable — especially for aging assets, undocumented components, or materials with in-service degradation. ABI® provides this data nondestructively, in situ, without service interruption.

Yield Strength & Tensile Properties

Direct measurement of yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, strain-hardening exponent, and the full true stress-strain curve — the foundation of any FFS assessment.

Fracture Toughness (KJc)

The Haggag Fracture Toughness Method determines KJc nondestructively from indentation data. Fracture toughness is required for Level 3 API 579/ASME FFS-1 assessments.

Reference Temperature & Master Curve

ABI-derived reference temperature (T₀) values are applied to the ASTM E1921 master curve to estimate fracture toughness at service temperatures — critical for low-temperature and cryogenic service.

MAOP Verification

For pipelines, ABI-measured yield strength enables accurate calculation of Maximum Allowable Operating Pressure (MAOP) per 49 CFR §192.607, without pipeline shutdown.

How ABI® Supports Industry Standards

API 579 / ASME FFS-1

ABI® provides the fracture toughness data required for Level 3 fitness-for-service assessments. The Haggag Fracture Toughness Method determines KJc and reference temperature T₀ nondestructively, enabling master curve analysis per ASTM E1921.

49 CFR §192.607 (PHMSA)

ABI® satisfies the nondestructive testing requirements of 49 CFR §192.607 for pipeline material verification. ABI-measured yield strength enables pipe grade determination and accurate MAOP calculation for undocumented pipeline segments.

ASTM E636-14

The standard test method for ABI® testing. Procedures are aligned with precision data from a six-laboratory interlaboratory study (L52280) that included PRCI, providing statistical precision data relevant to regulated applications.

ABI® vs. Destructive Testing

Why Nondestructive FFS Data Matters

Conventional Destructive Testing

  • Requires material removal from the component — permanently consuming irreplaceable material
  • Demands service interruption and may require full shutdown for sample extraction
  • Specimen machining, lab testing, and reporting can take weeks to months
  • Limited number of test locations due to cost and invasiveness
  • Impractical for components where material cannot be removed (operating pipelines, reactor vessels)

ABI® Nondestructive Testing

  • No material removal — leaves only a shallow spherical depression with compressive residual stress
  • Tests performed in situ on operating equipment without service interruption
  • Complete results in under 30 minutes per location, immediately available in the field
  • Test as many locations as needed to build a statistically robust dataset
  • ABI® replaces both the tensile test and the fracture toughness test with a single nondestructive procedure
