Nondestructive and Localized Measurements of Stress-Strain Curves and Fracture Toughness of Ferritic Steels at Various Temperatures

Haggag, F.M.1999DOE Final Report No. DOE/ER/82115-2

Haggag, F.M., "Nondestructive and Localized Measurements of Stress-Strain Curves and Fracture Toughness of Ferritic Steels at Various Temperatures Using Innovative Stress-Strain Microprobe® Technology," Final Report No. DOE/ER/82115-2, Award No. DE-FG02-96ER82115, Advanced Technology Corporation, October 1999.

This is the most comprehensive single validation document for ABI®/SSM® temperature performance. The report presents test results on ferritic steels from -130°C to +288°C — spanning the full operating range of nuclear and pipeline applications.

The temperature range is specifically chosen to cover the conditions encountered in practice: -130°C approaches the minimum temperature for arctic pipeline service, while +288°C is the design temperature for pressurized water reactor coolant systems. By validating ABI® performance across this full range, the report provides the temperature-dependent data that anchors ABI®'s credibility for safety-critical applications at all service temperatures.

The report provides detailed comparison between ABI-derived properties and conventional tensile and fracture toughness test results at each temperature point, demonstrating consistent agreement across the entire range. This temperature independence is essential because field applications may require testing at ambient temperatures that vary from sub-zero winter conditions to 40°C+ desert environments.
